DEFINITION

Programmatic ABM runs personalised campaigns against hundreds or thousands of accounts at once, using technology to vary messaging by segment rather than by individual company. It is the broadest of ITSMA's three tiers, sitting below ABM Lite and Strategic ABM, and it trades depth of personalisation for reach.

What does programmatic actually mean here?

Not programmatic advertising, confusingly. In ABM the word describes the scale and the automation, not the media buying. A programmatic programme personalises by firmographic segment, industry or buying stage rather than by company name, and the technology does the varying rather than a person.

Where is the line with demand generation?

The account list. Programmatic ABM still runs against a defined set of named accounts, even if that set runs to thousands. Demand generation targets a profile and accepts whoever responds. If you cannot say which accounts a campaign is aimed at, it is demand generation wearing ABM vocabulary.

What makes it work or fail?

Segment quality, almost entirely. A thousand accounts split into four meaningful segments will outperform the same list split into twenty arbitrary ones, because each message can actually be written for someone. The common failure is treating segment count as a proxy for personalisation.

Userled runs programmatic alongside 1:1 and 1:few against the same account list, so the tiers share creative and reporting rather than sitting in separate tools.
