Account-based selling

Account-based selling

DEFINITION

Account-based selling is the sales counterpart to ABM. Reps work a defined list of target accounts rather than a queue of inbound leads, reaching several members of the buying committee in a coordinated sequence, with marketing supplying the context and assets that outreach is built on.

What makes it different from good outbound?

The list is shared and the sequencing is coordinated. In ordinary outbound a rep picks their own targets and marketing finds out afterwards. In account-based selling the account list is agreed in advance, and marketing activity and rep outreach are timed against each other rather than running in parallel by coincidence.

What do reps actually need from marketing?

Less than is usually sent, and more specific. A signal that an account engaged is only useful with the context attached: which people, with what, and what to send next. Without that, alerts become noise within a fortnight.

Where does it usually fail?

At the handover. Marketing declares an account engaged, sales finds one junior contact clicked a blog post, and trust in the signal collapses. See multi-threading and buying committee for why account-level signal without person-level detail causes this.

Userled brings reps into the motion through a sales plugin rather than an alert.
