DEFINITION

Strategic ABM builds a bespoke programme for a single named account, usually a handful at a time. Account plans, messaging and content are made for that company alone, often with the sales team shaping them. It is the original form of ABM and the most resource-intensive of ITSMA's three tiers.

How many accounts can one person run?

Fewer than most plans assume. A genuine strategic account programme involves research, a bespoke plan, custom content and continuous coordination with the account team. Five to ten per marketer is realistic. Twenty is a list, not a programme, and it usually degrades into ABM Lite without anyone deciding to.

What separates it from a big deal pursuit?

Duration and intent. A pursuit ends when the deal does. Strategic ABM is run against accounts you expect to grow over years, which is why it is often used on existing customers as much as on new logos.

When is it the wrong choice?

When you cannot name the buying committee, when the account has no clear reason to change, or when the deal value will not carry the cost of the effort. Strategic ABM applied to an account that does not warrant it produces expensive, well-researched indifference.
